UCD Housing and Amenities

UCD Housing and Amenities

Overview
An 18.9-acre site developed into a comprehensive residential community for UC Davis graduate students and families — 601 units of high-density housing supported by standalone amenity buildings, with a nature-driven design carried from the surrounding Orchard Park landscape into every interior space.

Process
Interiors on this project were a two-person effort — myself and the interior design director. Together we handled interior design across the amenity spaces and residential buildings: unit layouts, common areas, corridors, and elevator lobbies. I personally developed the finish and material schedules carried through all project phases, and conducted the interdisciplinary design reviews of exterior finishes with the Lead Architect and Landscape Architect — work that kept the roughly 10,000 SF of amenity space reading as continuous with the surrounding landscape rather than separate from it.

Outcome
My work on this project concluded at design development, so I wasn’t there for construction. Orchard Park opened in August 2023, giving graduate students and student families about 1,500 beds on a site that had housed families for 51 years before it closed. The finished neighborhood carries the same connection to nature we were aiming for inside: at least 40 heritage trees, a children’s play area, and bike and pedestrian paths running between the buildings.
