Kaiser Permanente Acute Care Expansion
Overview
Kaiser Permanente’s Emergency Department was outgrowing its footprint as patient volume climbed year over year. The project addressed that growth with a 41,000 SF expansion — replacing mobile MRI, CT, and Angiography units parked in the ED staff lot with a new cardiac catheterization lab, interventional radiology suites, and 20 additional emergency department beds, all permanently integrated into hospital operations.

Process
I developed the architectural programming that integrated the new cardiac catheterization lab and interventional radiology suites while optimizing clinical workflows within a live, operating Emergency Department. I authored the design packages and technical drawings used for stakeholder presentations, and led the site analysis needed to repurpose existing square footage so new construction and remodeled space functioned as one cohesive system with the hospital’s existing infrastructure — all reviewed by the Architect of Record at each phase.
Outcome
My work on this project concluded at the end of schematic design. Construction later broke ground in December 2023, and the completed expansion opened to patients in January 2026 — doubling the Emergency Department’s bed capacity and bringing cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology fully in-house.
