Overview
Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital needed to expand inpatient capacity while modernizing core clinical infrastructure. Delivered as a Design-Build project and positioned as the first phase of a broader campus master plan, the scope centered on a new 119-bed patient tower — including a women’s triage unit, clinical laboratories, and full-service dietary facilities serving the hospital campus at large — paired with a comprehensive remodel of the hospital’s Central Sterile unit and targeted upgrades to the CT scanner suite, administrative offices, and public restrooms.

Process
I joined the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital project midway through Construction Administration and stayed through completion, working alongside the Architect of Record. Day to day, that meant managing and responding to RFIs — providing the technical clarifications field crews needed to keep work moving — and facilitating the flow of construction documents and submittals to keep the project on schedule. Because I was there through the finish, I helped ensure the design intent set at groundbreaking actually carried through into the completed tower.
Outcome
The 163,000 SF, six-story patient tower opened in October 2019, adding 119 beds and two new C-section operating rooms to the hospital’s Center for Women and Newborns. The project won the DBIA National Award of Merit in Healthcare Facilities.
